Assassin’s Creed Origins vs. Odyssey - Introduction

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey vs. Origins – Which One to Choose? (3)

Now that we know where to find the best offers on the market let us find out which game is better.

Assassin’s Creed Origins and Odyssey are two of the most groundbreaking introductions to the series. We are no longer in the city/pirate ship; it’s an ancient world with its old rules. You could say that those would be the origins of the Assassins in general (pun intended).

It is not only about Assassins vs. Templars. This conflict between freedom and order goes back ages, even millennia back! The game’s world was doubled tenfold, and you can now admire it from multiple perspectives!

Of course, it was not only this that made these two especially admired. The RPG elements elevated them from an action game to the RPG genre. Assassin’s Creed Origins looked more like The Witcher 3 competition than Prince of Persia.

Each AC game got a new perspective with more balanced combat and many additional side quests. Origins, it was a new game.

Origins vs. Odyssey Showdown – What Is Similar?

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey vs. Origins – Which One to Choose? (4)

A couple of things are similar in both games. For starters, those are both Assassin's Creed games, so the feeling of getting into the main character's mind through some kind of machine is familiar.

The gameplay is also more or less the same in both cases. We can talk about some tweaks here and there, but they do not pose a substantial difference.

In both games, you will still not have a minimap to guide you, but your faithful pet eagle somehow survived the troubles in both cases.

Another thing to remember is how RPG elements influence the gameplay. If the guard has some ridiculously high armor level, even you, the most remarkable assassin alive, will not be able to pierce. Unfortunately, it is as it is. It would be too arcade to let us kill people with a single knife blow.

The same goes for the equipment. As usual, in those cases, you will quickly find that most of the loot will have a color code connected to the rarity of an item. It will impact how valuable a piece of equipment is.

Additionally, both stories are being discovered by Layla Hassan, a researcher in the modern day. She is the one who uses the Animus to access the memories of Bayek and the Greeks.

Origins vs. Odyssey Showdown – Major Differences

We know the similarities between these two great games, so let’s discuss their differences. Remember that those titles are similar, so we must be a tad nitpicky to find something different.

Playable Characters

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey vs. Origins – Which One to Choose? (6)

The first thing that comes to mind when discussing differences comes straight after a loading screen. And that is – playable characters. Let’s look at how it plays out in both games.

Playable Characters in Assassin's Creed Origins

In the case of Origins, it is mostly Bayek’s story. At least in the looks department, an Egyptian golden god is fighting against the Roman Empire and the forces of Ptolemy and Julius Caesar. Although there are some instances where you can play as Bayek’s wife during ship combat, those are only an addition to most of the main quests. And we cannot count Layla Hassan as part of the playable characters in this one.

Playable Characters in Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Odyssey, however, gives you a much wider choice of characters. Well, 100% wider as you can choose between playing as Alexios or Kassandra. Also – it introduces a female playable assassin into the universe, so props for that.

Even though Bayek is a cool guy we would hang out with, we cannot underestimate the possibility of playing as two different characters in one Assassin's Creed game. Additionally, as Kassandra is said to be the main protagonist, it is good that Assassin's Creed Odyssey gives women some representation.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey vs. Origins – Which One to Choose? (7)

Two different studios made Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Origins. While Ubisoft Montreal created the first one, Odyssey has been handled by Ubisoft Quebec. We cannot give a score on which one is better, but it is a difference.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey vs. Origins – Which One to Choose? (8)

Let’s get back to some significant differences, then. Here is something gigantic - gameplay. You probably saw that coming from a mile away, but both games have many differences in how they approach this topic.

Assassin’s Creed Origins Gameplay

Origins, while heavily inspired by The Witcher 3, decided to create a role-playing masterpiece with a skill tree of abilities and a lot of loot collecting. You have your legendaries, epics, rares, and everything. You can also ride a horse or…, well, that would be spoiling it. Let’s just say that it is something from a fantasy.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Gameplay

On the other hand, Odyssey goes more into Dragon Age territory with lots and lots of dialogue options and romances. It is also much more intense when it comes to action. Similarly to the Black Flag, you have a ship that you can customize and invite crew members to.

Also, there are territories you can control that you must fight for when they are being invaded. It is advanced, and you will find a lot of additional elements to have fun with rather than just using your hidden blade.

This one is pretty hard, as both these games focus on a completely different aspect of RPGs. If you like having side characters with you and singing sea shanties – you will likely enjoy some Odyssey content.

But if you like to be a lone wolf with tons of loot to collect, you should pick Origins. It will bring you much more enjoyment.

As we are torn in this case, we will call it a draw.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey vs. Origins – Which One to Choose? (9)

Another essential element in the Assassin’s Creed games is the setting. Many critics have praised the franchise for how well-structured the worlds these two games create. Every place has hidden secrets here and there, and it’s a joy to find them all, even if it’s just filler content.

Let’s compare how those two games managed to go over this task.

Assassin’s Creed Origins Setting

Origins are set in the beautifully created ancient Egypt with great pyramids and Sphinxes, deserts, and landscapes. Because it is set when Egypt was fighting with the Roman empire, you will meet some of the most famous historical figures from that time, like Cleopatra and even Julius Ceasar.

When it comes to Assassin’s Creed games, you really cannot go much higher than that.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Setting

On the other hand, you have your Odyssey with Greek mythology and the beautiful city-states of ancient Greece. We visit Greece during the fascinating Peloponnesian War, one of the most enjoyed by Hollywood executives periods in ancient history. You will be able to meet the fascinating world of Spartans and travel to Athens.

You will meet some crazy historical and mythological characters from that time, like monsters and philosophers.

This one is really close, but we have to give it to the Origins. Ancient Egypt looks fantastic, with those long horseback rides through the desert. It is marvelous to wonder at, for sure.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey vs. Origins – Which One to Choose? (10)

Both games have a fascinating story to tell, not only from the perspective of Templars vs. Assassin Brotherhood but also – chaos vs. order. The philosophical background of this conflict is something to wonder about for sure. But, to keep things concise, let us focus on the two games.

Assassin’s Creed Origins

In Origins, we control Bayek, a Madjay warrior who wants to find people who killed his son. Because of that, he travels to ancient Alexandria. The city is in the middle of the historical conflict between the Roman Empire and Egypt.

It is not a unique story of any sort because trying to get revenge for your son’s death is not something that Stanley Kubrick would want to create a movie out of, but it is still something at least interesting enough to keep you going.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

This one is similar. You control a Misthios, a mercenary warrior who fights for money. The two playable characters are siblings, and their conflict fuels everything that happens.

You also follow two other plotlines where you try to kill the Cult of Cosmos member or discover the secrets of Atlantis, the first civilization. Both are interesting and can give you some time to think.

Although non of those two stories is something to be in awe about, Odyssey’s main story feels much more enjoyable. Even though Bayek is a charismatic lead, the revenge plot is just too much of a cliche.

The main plot should be something more interesting then - they killed my loved ones, so I killed them. It is not an 80s action movie; we could get something better out of it.

Point for Odyssey.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey vs. Origins – Which One to Choose? (11)

To be honest, it feels a bit like cheating because AC Odyssey was released later, and you can see that naval exploration, killing animals, and boss battles are much improved compared to the Origins.

But, it is a duel for most of it, so let us see what kind of differences are in visuals for both games.

Assassin’s Creed Origins Visuals

The desert looks fantastic. The design of the characters could be a tad better, but if you look at it from the perspective of riding a horse through the desert, it is something else. And it should not be underestimated for sure.

Even though some time has passed since the release, the game still looks stunning, and in the end, isn’t it everything that matters? You can see how detailed and well-crafted all the elements are and how much artistry is put into creating those legendary weapons.

For that age, it took our breath away!

Assassin's Creed Odyssey Visuals

Regarding AC games, Odyssey is one of the best-looking ones. Big battles, amazingly created ships with modifications and everything, water that feels real, and overall – the whole game is stunning.

You can compare the landscapes and everything for these two games, and it goes down to which part of the world/history you like better. But you cannot underestimate the power of a few years of technological advancements.

Especially in the faces/human body department. In Odyssey, characters look more natural, and those battles for territories with dozens of characters fighting look extremely fun to be a part of.

This one is pretty obvious. We love riding in the desert in Origins, but you can’t jump over the fact that Odyssey was better in that department.

Athens and Sparta look incredible, with details of the homes, people roaming the streets, merchants trying to sell their stuff, or people just walking around, having a great time. It is a breathing and fascinating city that everyone should take a peek at.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey vs. Origins – Conclusion

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey vs. Origins – Which One to Choose? (12)

So, it is time to set the record straight, once and for all. Which game is better? Which one deserves the number one spot on our list? Will it be the riding-into-the-sunset vibe of Origins or the big battles everyone seems to talk about from Odyssey? Or maybe it’s a draw, and we can’t honestly choose between those fantastic franchise installments?

Well, we can, and so we did. The winner is: drumrolls please, Odyssey. And it is not to throw shade at Origins. It is still a fantastic production; Odyssey just has too much to offer in comparison.

You can own a ship that you can modify. You can invite the crew and even have romances. On the other hand, it would be pretty weird if Bayek, during his quest for revenge, suddenly just abandoned his wife and decided to have a fling on the side. Life hits you in many ways, but most players would agree that it would be out of character for him.

Also – it seems like the franchise is going in the right direction if there is something better going on in every installment. Assassin’s Creed outdone themselves with these two, so we hope the next ones will be as good as those. The hype is real, so let us see if they can keep up with the players' expectations.
